Rural Ministry Courses for 2007/2008

RM4550 Leadership in Multi-Point Parishes

This course studies the changing patterns of rural ministry and the formation of multi-point parishes. It addresses the challenges and opportunities for ministry in these settings. Leadership, administrative and planning aspects of this type of ministry will be explored. Half course.

Meets: Thursdays, 6:30-9:30 pm, November 1-December 13, Northwestern Hall 240
This course addresses pastoral leadership in parishes consisting of two or more congregations. It addresses the unique challenges and opportunities of ministry in these type of parishes. Many rural contexts will have parishes with more than one congregation in the parish arrangement, so this is an important course for students likely to serve in rural contexts.


RM4570 The Ministry of Evangelism in Congregations

A course that explores the theological foundations, theories, and practices of evangelism within congregations in light of the mission of God. Students are provided with opportunities to study both corporate and individual methods of evangelism and explore ways to integrate these into the full ministry of the church. Students choose their own contextual emphasis for papers and projects: (1) small town and rural; or (2) mid-size or large city. Course may be applies to either CML or Rural Ministry concentrations. (Note: This course is double-listed with CL4510 The Ministry of Evangelism in Congregations.) Half course.

This course addresses evangelism in the congregation. It is cross-listed as a congregational leadership course, and so will apply evangelism to both rural and urban contexts.


RM4515 Ministry in a Small Town and Rural (STaR) Context

Students, together with clergy and lay persons from small town and rural congregations, study issues affecting America's rural communities. Implications for ministry and leadership in this context will be explored. The foundational topics for the course will be chosen on an annual basis. The course will be held in Cooperstown, North Dakota. Because topics change, course may be repeated. Full course.

Meets: January 14-18, 2008 (students will have reading assignments prior to class week, will meet in Cooperstown beginning at 1:00 pm Monday January 14 and concluding by noon on January 18, and will have writing assignments to be completed after the class week):The topic for this year's course is congregational and community leadership. Students are placed in congregational groups, actually defining a congregational and community context, where they will work with pastors and lay congregational members addressing issues of ministry in the rural context.


CC1612 Shalom Hill Farm, Windom, Minnesota
Live with rural families and on the Shalom Hill farm. Learn about mission and ministry in rural cultural communities. Study rural issues and opportunities for mission in a rural context. Registration and a $100 non-refundable deposit are required. Half course.

This is one of the rural cross-cultural classes. Each year the class meets at Shalom Hill Farm and at another context; this year's second context is western Iowa.


RM4520 Foundations of Small Town and Rural (STaR) Ministry

This course is an introduction to the local, national, and global influences which are shaping small town and rural (STaR) life and ministry today. An emphasis will be placed on the realities of the small town and rural context and ways in which congregational leaders can creatively and faithfully respond in mission. Full course.

Meets: Spring semester (February 7-May 14), days and times of class to be determined:This is one of the foundational rural ministry courses. It is designed to be a course that is be a survey of rural ministry -- if you can take only one rural ministry course this is one to consider because it will give an overview of many rural ministry topics.
